School House Rock

In the news today via Daily Mail (UK)

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has strongly hinted for the first time that she could write an eighth book in the series.

Rowling, 42, admits she has ‘weak moments’ when she feels she will pen another novel about the boy wizard.

That’s right! I know there are tons of you Harry Potter superfans that quiver at the thought! I’ll admit, a thriving Harry Potter fan, I am not… But a prep-rock style connisseur, I certainly am! To be quite honest, when I read this little snippet of news, the first things I thought of were scenes of massive school-uniformed actors and actresses redefining the “indie prep” look. Thanks, HP!

The messed hair, the untucked shirts, loose ties… I love the look! Here’s some more inspiration…:

Return of The Jumper!

Of COURSE Gossip Girl had to make an appearance… Oh, Blair! You’re such the debutante!

Here’s an example of how you could put together a great nouveau-school uniform while adding TONS of personality:

While most of these things pictured above are astronomically priced, I’ve found some VERY similar pieces on the cheap!

Wet Seal has the exact sweater dress pictured above (Bell Sleeve Sweater Dress$24.50) in both creme and brown. I love a creme/maroon mix… But brown and creme, or something similar would be darling! Just try to keep the colors simple and not to bravely matched.

Simply Vera by Vera Wang has a great double-breasted cardigan in a charcoal-y gray that’s a perfect compliment to the style above. It’s not a bad deal at $34.80, either! Size Large only.

Pocket Book

This Backyard Oaks Pocket Book is a beautiful patent maroon color. The shape of it looks like the back of some really cute jeans and just add to the whole “preppy” look! $24.99.

Steve Madden has a beautiful mary-jane style pump in a bone color that fits perfectly with this look. The Clasical Bone Leather Pump over some maroon tights like these from Sock Dreams (best socks ever!) would be chic, but still funky. Shoes available for pre-order at $69.95 and tights are only $22 and come in a ton of colors.

So those are the key components! The belt, necklace, headband, etc… are where your fabulous personality come in! But there are a few tricks to keeping this look chic and not trying-way-too-hard-and-failing

  • As Coco Chanel famously advised, take off one accessory before leaving the house. Especially in a jewelry/hair-gem look such as this one – it can be easy to overload.
  • Take the extra time to smooth fly-aways, straighten hems, and the like. This look is all about appearing perfectly groomed.
  • Keep the makeup sophisticated and simple. Something like Temptalia’s Matte 001 Tutorial would be perfect!
  • For more info on the perfect collegiate look, see Gala Darling’s Preparatory Style article!
  • If you’ve got some great fake (or real!) nerd-style glasses (slight cat-eye, slim black frames), rock them! This is the perfect time!

Enjoy your uppity-ness!

xoxo.
