What A Doll! Pt. 2

Posted on 04.21.08 to $100 and under by Lindsay

Continuing on from What A Doll! #1, the makeup lesson, I figured we ought to have some adorable and irresistibly feminine frocks to pair with our new wide eyes and soft lips.

The key to embodying the “doll” look is keeping it sweet, girly, and minutely sexy. Babydoll dresses are usually draped over the knockers of playboy bunnies and strippers (which isn’t a bad thing!), but that’s not exactly what we’re going for here. Short dresses are typically the sweetest, and the more frills and girly crap, the better. I like the look of short, light dresses paired with high-as-hell closed, round-toe heels. Think Lolita without the scandal.

THE DRESS

CRINKLE SILK CHIFFON CAMISOLE DRESS

Max Studio Crinkle Chiffon Dress

$248 $98

You definitely want to stick to either empire waist or a-line cut dresses. Ones that are tailored, or sack-like won’t give the same effect.

CAMISOLE DRESS

Max Studio Camisole Dress

$126 $58

I, personally, like dresses that are sleeveless. It gives an opportunity to show off pretty shoulders and pretty skin, as well as keeps the sweet-factor high. Covering your whole arm will cause a more vampy look than doll-ish.

COTTON SILK VOILE SHIRRED SMOCK

Max Studio Silk Voile Shirred Frock

$198 $78

Darker colors are a delicate matter because you want to keep a light and airy vibe going. However, if your dark-colored dress has ultra feminine details like lace at the neckline, or ruffles at the hem, you can get away with rocking a deeper hue.

Alisha Levine Berg Metallic Mini Dress

Alisha Levine Berg Metallic Mini Dress

$240 $120

This dress is so cute and it comes in gold or silver! If you’re feeling a bit shape-conscious, feel free to throw a ribbon or scarf around your waist for definition. As long as it’s not a gigantic leather corset-belt, you should be able to maintain your look.

Sweet Pea black mesh scoopneck peasant dress

Sweet Pea black Mesh Peasant Dress

$120 $74

THE SHOES

The shoes really cinch the outfit and give it the ultimate definition. For minidresses with an edge of sweetness, I suggest platform heels to really emphasize the length of the leg. I like round-toe because it keeps the ensemble from appearing like you were trying too hard. As any fashion-conscious women ought to know, an ankle strap will chop off the line of the leg (for most women), so stick to regular pumps.

Oh, also, wedges will send you more in the direction of Natasha Lyonne in The Slums of Beverly Hills. Not so great.

Michael Kors Kors black leather 'Lolita' oxford pumps

Michael Kors Black Leather ‘Lolita’ Pump

$129 $78

Generally, I’d say “the simpler, the better”, but I’m also a sucker for detail…

ENGAGED COGNAC LE

Steve Madden “Engaged” Pump in Cognac

$99.95

These also come in beautiful black leather.

MATILDAA BLACK PARIS

Steve Madden “Matilda Paris” in Black Patent

$79.95
Ships on 7/20

Don’t get me wrong – straps are a death-knell for the leg line… but elegant, low T-straps like these really flatter the legs from the side by making the ankle appear slimmer.

Jessica Simpson Women's Reeba Platform Pump

Jessica Simpson Reeba Platform Pump

$89.95 $62.97

If you’re quite daring, you could try your luck with stockings and some lace-up ankle booties

Steve Madden Women's Reilly Pump

Steve Madden Reilly Pump

$99.95

THE LOOK

I know in the first “What a Doll!” post, I said to keep it sweet… But really, if you’re taking it on a smoldering date, or a night on the town, nothing’s sexier than pairing this look with a smoky eye. Seriously. Nothing is sexier.

Stila Palette in Smoky Eye
$40

I know it sounds expensive, but seriously – this is all you need for the best smoky eye you’ll ever have. It comes with instructions (AUDIO instruction that are actually accessed by pushing a button on the PALETTE!), and four beautiful smoky colors.

Take pics, and sweet it up!

xoxo.

I love the dark mauve dress and the black patent Steve Madden mary-janes, though not together, or at least not for summer. I wonder if those shoes come in creme (cream?) I always get confused between French and English spellings, and I’m America…goodness!
