Christina Hendricks: Finally, A Woman
Posted on 01.27.09 to Inspiration, Opinion by Lindsay
SAG SAG SAG. JASON WU MICHELLE KNOCKOFF. LOOK LIKE MICHELLE OBAMA. SAG AWARDS A LOT.
Look familiar? I bet it does, because the above topics are pretty much the only things that are being covered in the fashion world lately, and it’s starting to drive me insane. Every other post is “Get Michelle’s Look!” or “DID YOU KNOW? She was wearing Jason Wu! Let’s ALL wear Jason Wu now!“, and more recently “SAG Awards – Angelina is REALLY PRETTY, YOU KNOW?“.
Gag me, I’m so over it… but I read it anyway. Having “unread” items in my Google Reader gives me some kind of OCD complex that I just can’t seem to get over.
So, while scanning uber-fashion-blog-giant, FabSugar, reading “SAG Awards: (Insert Celebrity Name Here)” about 400 times, I enter yet another clone-post to see a red set of curves so unique to the average starlet silhouette that my eyes bulged and I had to stare at it for a good 30 seconds to make sure that it was correct, and they didn’t sneak in a fisheye lens or something…
Sure enough, it was Christina Hendricks. The coveted “Joan Holloway” on the ever-dreamy drama “Mad Men“.
I’d seen her on the show – yeah, she was hot. Actually, “hot” is probably a total understatement. She was divine. She wore those high-waisted skirts like a champ, and her cone-tastic bras didn’t even distract from her already stunning facial features. Yes, we finally have a curvy, realistic representation of women on TV – and she’s sexy.
So when I came across her photo on the red carpet at the SAG awards, I shouldn’t have been surprised to see this:

YOWZA! THAT, my friends, is how you do curvy, strong, and powerful. Accentuate that waist, put your hands on those full, gorgeous hips and sashay through that carpet like you own it.
I discourage reading the comments of said FabSugar post, as you’ll once again see the ugly side of mass marketing and image marketing as displayed in people claiming “she looks like she has an elephant growing in her hips” and “this [dress] does not help her figure at all“, as if something’s amiss.
Whatever. Miss Hendrick’s – you’re the canon for women, in my opinion. Keep on keepin’ on, you’ve got B&B 100% behind you.
(And what a behind it is!)

Ummm… how does that dress NOT help her figure??? The woman has curves for days! THAT is the way women were MEANT to look! Seriously, she looks sexy as hell! Sexy, confident, and comfortable in her own skin. Meow!!
I was one of those scrawny girls in high school, due to a freakishly high metabolism, and THAT’S what I wanted to look like! I was jealous of my friends with the curves! I have them to a point now–post childbirth–and I’m so much happier and healthier looking. Those other “starlets” on the red carpet look malnourished!
Seriously, look back through the generations, even as few as forty years ago… or thirty years ago! Even to the eighties! And the women that were considered sex objects and desirable were not size 2 and scrawny, but had an actual figure! What a sad story this generation demands…

I LOVE this woman. I first saw her in – you guessed it – Firefly (I highly recommend YouTube-ing her scenes, as she rocks that show just as hard as she rocks Mad Men) and started watching Mad Men, in part, because of her. (I’m glad I did: it’s an amazing show!)

How does it not help her figure?! It showcases it! I suppose to them the idea “figure” would be a toothpick. Someone needs to tell them that a toothpick isn’t a figure, it’s a LINE. She looks gorrrrgeous.

I was watching Mad Men with my husband the other day and I said, “She has such a good body!! That’s what a woman’s body should look like!”
She is stunning.

What a welcome image. After being inundated with the malnourished Lindsay Lohan every time I try to indulge in some celebrity gossip this week Christina’s photos are a breath of fresh air. She looks absolutely smashing! Anyone who thinks otherwise is definitely nuts.

Yes, she looks great, but I tire of statements that say something to the effect of – “real” women have curves. I’m a real woman, and I am 5′ 10′, slim, and don’t have a ton of curves. Real women come in all shapes and sizes, not just uber skinny or voluptuous. You don’t need to be model thin or have double D’s and a tiny waist to be beautiful.

Thank God!!

Embrace what you got, girl! =) I’m a firm believer that women lose more weight when they’re comfortable with their bodies. No scientific proof here, just unfounded theory!
