Daily Outfit: A Little Different

Posted on 09.12.09 to Outfits by Lindsay

Alternate Title: Spotted & Dotted.

I have to be honest… I hate taking outfit photographs. I believe that the way most women capture outfits (head-to-toe in frame) doesn’t do any justice to the clothing. Presumeably, it became the most often used method of outfit photography simply because it’s the most obvious, and to most, the easiest. Right?

Well, I hate it. Maybe it’s a product of my long term, on-and-off relationship with photography. How do you get a feel for the motion of the fabric? The weight? The texture? How it conforms to your body? Maybe it’s a product of my lifelong devotion to editorial magazine photography. Or maybe it really because that photo template really sucks. Either way, I don’t want to do it anymore.

Everything about fashion, to me, is cerebral. It’s a puzzle to connect the designer’s inspiration with the actual garment, the color coordination is sensual, but absolutely mental. Don’t even get me started on choosing the garments in the first place, talk about a synapse festival.

I figured I’d take an outfit picture that might require just as much cerebral activity as the clothes themselves.

(Besides, what better way to break in this nice, new site design than with some huge photographs?)

Strangely off topic, but I’m glad to hear good things about the Torrid leggings… I’ve been wanting to find more, especially as winter comes up…

I hate doing outfit posts, too, especially as a plus-sized gal. I’ll have to take some tips for you. Also, loving the leggings. That’s one thing I like about Torrid…the leggings are really comfy. :)

I cannot agree more – the straight on boring shot gives no sense of texture, style or swing. I like the layouts that give me more than one view and I especially like seeing a shot that shows me the print in detail (like spotted and dotted).

I largely don’t do outfit posts because I don’t have a camera with a remote. But it’s also due to the troubles you mention – the never seem to do the outfit (or myself) justice. I’m loving the way you did this one spread, though. Maybe closer, more unconventional shots are the way to go! [Also, your eyes kill me. They're so beautifully blue!]

GREAT photographs! To be honest, although ‘Daily Outfit’ photos were the most requested item on one of my reader feedback polls a few months ago, I reeally struggle with them – I always find that they never DO show the outfit in its entirety, and as I don’t have a self-timer, often find it really difficult to find someone to take photos of them – this provided me with some fabulous inspiration. Thank-you!
