Dear Urban Outfitters,

Posted on 01.20.09 to Opinion, Updates by Lindsay

You and I have had some struggles over the years. First, you were a cool, below-the-radar place to shop (you know, back in the 90′s), and I loved you. Every piece of clothing my sister would purchase from you, I’d secretly covet. Then, when my Mom took me there to make my first purchase, I fell completely in love with the mid-calf, knobby knit pencil skirt you offered me… I kept it until less than a year ago – it was still perfectly in-tact, wonderful… Very you.

But now, I enter your store and see GOBS of mass-produced knockoffs in every corner… I see you in the tabloids, and run by a nasty corporate headquarters who seem somewhat intolerant of what could be a very large piece of their target demographic. I see hemlines getting shorter, larger sizes becoming less available, and I cry inside as I watch you fade into the monotony of hipster-wear.

I struggle to withhold my support of you, because I so fondly remember you for what you used to be… But when a friend showed me a skirt she was embarrassed to enjoy (because it was in your store), my mind was made up.

I saw this photo as a “modeled” version of your garment:

urban outfitters exploitation american apparel style

You’ve finally hit the bottom, Urban Outfitters. You’ve succumb to the very depths of exploitation, displaying a young-ish girl wearing your (admittedly lovely, ugh) skirt in some kind of Floridian retirement home… Was she walking around topless while visiting her grandparent’s house while wearing this garment? Is this some kind of kitschy spring break party, where the kids are so cool they they just screw and drink all day, walking around in their “classy” garb?

I’ve long been disappointed with your now-rival, American Apparel… And if you’ve made this decision to conform to their advertising tactics for competition, please be aware that it will never work. Perhaps it will suffice for young, late-teen girls who aspire to be so free and “unique”, but to the shoppers who care about where their dollar lands – it will never work.

You’ve successfully turned what could have been something demure into something crass.

Don’t worry, I entertained the thought that it might just be one bad marketing decision on one particular skirt… So I shopped around a little. The next catagory was shorts.

Ah, yes. Shorts. Because… from the photos you can tell how the shorts (pants? jeans?) fall from the hip. Naturally, she was photographed topless to… um, be sure we’re well aware of where the shorts rest on the waist.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m well aware of your advertising strategy. Sexy, young, wild… It’s all very alluring. I used to be an aspiring fashion photographer myself… However, when I would practice my craft, I’d typically dress my subjects first.

Admittedly, I did “dig” for these examples… Your catalogue isn’t full of half-naked women (perhaps half-full of half-naked women), but digging aside, consider this awareness.

I’m watching you, Urban Outfitters. I’m keeping a keen eye on your foray into the smutty world of exploitadvertising, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. I encourage everyone reading this to do the same.

Signed with suspicious glances,

PS – I’m sure these “shorts” are every mother’s dream.

Full coverage my ass. xo.

Thanks so much for this post! Yes, I do think they’re targetting rich scenester teenagers who drink and screw all day. I have also long become sick of American Apparel and their exploitative ad campaigns. I’m not a feminazi but seriously? I’m suprised to see UO stoop to this. I guess desperate times call for…

I was in a UO store last week, in the mood for a fun new t-shirt which they can usually deliver on. I had to dig through a pile to find one where the design wasn’t messed up. This wasn’t some cute detail… they were just sloppy printing jobs! Their quality control is out the window right now.

I don’t mind paying for something I love but not when it’s made like crap!

I’m keeping my eyes on them too!

I remember when I was still working there (up until Autumn ’06) how the clothes were in sharp decline of quality, NOTHING fit me though I was anywhere from a size 10-14 (mostly a 10 at other stores). It sickened me to find out their tye dye shirts (mineral wash) were sold for $32 and I knew they paid 30c. to have them manufactured…

YES! Low grade mass manufacturing to a hipster crowd = bleck!

Lara: Exactly! The quality is disgraceful. I’m just so disappointed in them.

Ashe Mischief: I forgot that you worked there! I can’t believe the total greed that occurs in some of these stores… But $32 for a 30c shirt? What is that, 1600% markup?

Gracious.

What a waste of a good photograph. She could’ve been in a cute covered up top.

Great, now we’re going to catch guys and perverts with those magazines jerking off in the john instead of VS…

Thank you for speaking out, I couldn’t agree more. The most recent catalog from Urban was shocking with all those half naked tweens. I couldn’t believe the smut I was seeing. I love art, love the female form, not opposed to nudity in any way shape or form but this is just using sex to sell, and it’s really irresponsible. They have no regard for their customers (new and old) or the message they’re sending to young girls who are just beginning to find their voice and express themselves through fashion. It’s just gross.

FB: Eeew, such a gross image, but a probable one now! At least VS is somewhat tasteful…

Voila Megan: Well, it’s so nice to meet you! I’m glad that I’m not alone in my total disappointment.

Budget Babe: You’re totally right. I, too, LOVE the female form – but putting a “little girl” into a skirt with her arms over her rack… That’s not “appreciating” anymore.

Love the skirt, hate the picture. We only got a UO location in Vancouver in the last couple of years, so I never got to know it in its heyday. It’s always hit-or-miss for me: I go in to browse but rarely buy something because I consider most things in there overpriced for the quality of the piece.

Yeah, i couldn’t agree more. Their catalogs have been going this way for a while now, but when I got this one in the mail I was actually shocked. Really, urban? Can’t you just go back to selling awesome clothes like your lovely older sister, Anthropologie?

I found your blog from the blog awards. I like it. :)
