Earth Week :: Peace Keeper Nail Polish Review
Posted on 04.24.09 to Budget Fashion & Home Decor Under $50!, Ethical Fashion by Lindsay

I admit – I had so much fun making Earth Week for B&B that I had to throw in one more little post to finally cap off the event.
I received some sample polishes from a company I hadn’t heard of before – Peace Keeper. When I heard that there were eco-friendly nail lacquers, the first thing I did was get a mental whiff of the chemical cocktail that makes up most nail polishes. How could that smell be good for the world? Much less, they also offer an eco-friendly nail polish remover? That is some of the most foul-smelling stuff you can find in a drugstore…
So, naturally, I figured that it was going to look, smell, feel, and act differently. I assumed it’d be thick and chunky (because… there’d be no icky, bad chemicals in it!) and smell… well, better than regular nail polish, I guess.
Well, let me be the first to tell you: I was wrong. Surprising, huh? Peace Keeper polishes smell just like normal polish, which is the only downside (to any polish), as it holds the same properties as regular nail polishes in terms of viscosity, shade, and ease of application.

The one thing I did notice about these polishes, though, is that they’re very sheer. Almost any color could be a neutral! I’m definitely a stranger to painting my nails, but I’m happy to know that the colors are neutral enough that I don’t need to worry about wearing a demure outfit with bright blue or hot pink nails (and trying to pull it off).
The colors I received were Paint Me Patient (shimmery gold with copper undertones) and Paint Me Stunning (watermelon pink shimmer). I want to point out that all of their polishes are vegan with the exception of Paint Me Stunning. These colors are made with Moroccan Argan Oil “that is values for its nutritive, cosmetic and medicinal properties, as well as Amino Acids to nourish the nail.” Sweet!
I also received a top/base coat and a Nail Nourisher “with sweet almond oil, ginseng root extract, myrrha extract, and vitamin E for instant revitalization of cuticles and nail surface.” Double sweet!
So I started with a base coat and started painting. I’ll mention again that I am not a veteran self-manicurist, and frankly fail at nail polish application 99% of the time. You may recall the “helpful comments” I recieved on my last nail post. Admittedly not a pro – and I’m okay with that.

The above photo is of Paint Me Stunning, which is a very sheer, very shimmery pink. Both of these colors are easily “every day colors”, but this one is really, really subdued and pretty. It’d compliment a bit of a rocker vibe really well – add some “girly” back in there. (Sorry about the dark coloring at the cuticle… I had ManGlaze on before!)

Between the two colors, Paint Me Patient was definitely my favorite. A touch of shimmer with a bronze-y, coppery tone not only looks good, but it definitely goes with everything. You could be wearing jeans and a t-shirt, and this color would completely refine the look and *ahem*… polish your appearance.
If you’re interested in giving Peace Keeper polishes a try, you can get them for only $10 on their site, or you can find them in Whole Foods, as well.
xoxo.

[...] Another Sustainable Sale?! How About Three? Written on October 22, 2009. Written by Jennifer Nicole. First of all, that sale on Peacekeeper lipsticks, glosses and nail polish ends in eleven hours, so if you still want to check it out, get on it. (If you’re curious how their polishes translate on actual nails, check out Elle’s review of Peacekeeper’s polishes here.) [...]

I found this blog doing a search for Peace Keeper nail polish. I’ve tried them before but didn’t get good results (I found it was much harsher on my nails than other natural nail products), but have been thinking about trying it again. The last time I used it was not that long after kicking my commercial nail polish habit and I wonder if I was still seeing that damage…
Anyhow, have you used the product for an extended period of time? If so, do you find your nails stay healthy? I’ve been using Suncoat for years and absolutely love it, but it’s getting so hard to find these days.

Well, I noticed that it started chipping after about 3-4 days (which is definitely better than other polishes that I’ve used in the past) and my nailed seemed to be in pretty good condition once I took it off. It did -peel- off, in the end, though.
I do take Vitamin E and Fish Oil/Omega-3-6-9 every day, too, to keep my hair/nails in really good condition, so that might have influenced the way that the polish interacted with the protiens in my nails.
I hope this helped! I’ll keep an eye out for other eco-friendly polishes in the future!
