I Think I Have a Shopping Addiction
Posted on 02.26.09 to Opinion, Polls by Lindsay
Seriously. I think I have a shopping addiction… But it’s not like the contemporary “shopping addiction” where I max out everyone and their Mom’s credit cards until the sky comes falling down around me and my chihuahua is seized by the government, no. My shopping addiction is a little more simplified than that.
I am addicted to the action of shopping, with a contrasting fear of spending money. I could shop all day, go to 5 different malls looking for clothing, but not buying anything. I don’t even need to be shopping for myself – I can shop for other people, with other people, near other people… As long as I’m shopping.
My favorite places to shop are (obviously) off-price stores like Marshall’s and TJ Maxx, but topping the list is the internet – the biggest off-price store of them all. These are the places that require so much digging, hunting, scavenging, checking, trying on… That you need to literally set hours aside in your day. These are not the “I’ll just pop in on the way home” stores, these are commitments.
I think I just feed off the hunt for the perfect boot, or the most discounted designer dress… Then, when I find it, I’m already satisfied with it all, so I don’t buy it.
Am I alone in this? I’m curious.
How do you feel towards shopping? Hate it, love it, can’t get enough of it?
Let me know in the comments.
xoxo.

That is totally what I do, except with less off-price shopping on the internet. I’m all about the brick-and-mortar shops. =)

You are not alone in this. My love of shopping is not about acquiring the latest, greatest name brand item. My love shopping is going out there finding the best bargain. How many coupons can I bring in? How many surveys do I have to take in order to get a nice sized gift card to my fav store? When is BOGO day, 99-cent shipping week or rebate month? I’m also addicted to window shopping. I can (and have) spent five hours in the mall trying on fantasy items that I knew that I wouldn’t be buying just because I wanted to see how I looked in them–Gowns, stilettos, skinny jeans? I may buy something small like a hankie or a pair of socks just so the sales person gets a little commission from my time.

I miss shopping with you! I get so frustrated when I go by myself, but if I’m with a friend and we make some sort of progress (or have nothing in particular in mind to shop for) I could do it all day.

I like to shop, but I have to be in the right mood without other things that i should be doing.
I really have next to no money to spend on clothes, but when I do have money to spend, what I enjoy more is the feeling after you have bagged the perfect item and take it home.
I get a little thrill for weeks just seeing a new item of clothing in my closet.
The only exception to liking shopping is when I have to buy jeans, they all look the same, are loathsome to try on, and furthermore it is next to impossible for me to tell if they will be flattering if I don’t actually go through all the trouble of trying them on.

I am the same way & finding a good bargain only fuels the addiction even more, it’s a terribly viscous cycle. Marshall’s and TJmaxx are THE places to go — their yellow tag clearance sales are amazing I scored Kate Spade flats for $10 and Cole Haan snakeskin boots for $45! amazing! happy hunting

I love shopping, I love finding things I want. The only time I hate shopping is when I’m actually shopping for something specific and NOWHERE has the one thing I want perfectly. That’s when I get frustrated with shopping, especially when I’m on a deadline.

I completely agree! Internet shopping is a terrible habit of mine – I don’t feel right if I haven’t gone online at least once a day to scour the e-shops, and search for the perfect eBay bargain of my dreams. I just feel odd. I don’t even have to buy anything – the act of shopping on the internet itself can be just as satisfying.
Don’t wrroy, you are definitely not alone in this addiction!

I am the exact same way! In fact, my husband makes fun of me all the time because I’ll go back and forth for DAYS over whether or not I should buy something, and then when I finally decide to take the plunge (which isn’t very often) the item is sold out. But, yes, I too spend a great deal of time bargain hunting on the internet and rarely do I actually purchase anything. Hey, I think it’s a good thing! You’re happy and not broke!

You’re not alone at all. I feel very similarly, and have been on a shopping ban for 5 months, going on six, to try to sort myself out a bit. Bleh!

I love to shop, but I haven’t been buying as many things lately, just fewer things that are of better quality and more expensive. The thrill of shopping for me lies in seeing all these pretty things and envisioning how they might look when paired with other pretty things, or trying to imagine how they would integrate into my wardrobe, or thinking of who they’d be perfect for…by the time all this thinking and mulling over is done, I feel satisfied even if I haven’t bought anything.
