Site Review: Covet.com

Once upon a time, internet-savvy shoppers were oversaturated with sales, yet always seemed to leave their computer screen empty-handed as a result of pure overwhelm. There are thousands of great sales at various online stores daily, and we shoppers can easily take one step into an e-store, look around, and run, screaming. There are so many!

That’s why, over the last year or so, one of the big internet trends has materialized in the form of personalized newsletters, containing daily sales on your preselected brands, size, and price range. The leader of this pack is easily B&B friend, Shop It To Me, but there are new ones surfacing every day.

The latest is freshly launched Covet.com, no relation to IFB genius Jennine of The Coveted, but does it have the potential to be as impressive?

I gave it a test run on Monday morning to see exactly what this project could offer.

First, signing up is more than just signing up. You’re lead through a series of questions (with visual aid) regarding your personal style, and preferences. Two celebrities face off before you, and you choose which is “more your style”. Here are some of the examples I received:

1

Mandy Moore vs. Anna Wintour… Who’d have thought we’d see the day? This example was different enough to really allow me to choose “my style”. Because I would strongly hesitate before wearing a skirt with a matchy-matchy jacket, I chose Ms. Moore. (Anna, don’t kill me!)

2

This one… was a little tougher. They’re essentially the same outfit with different, age-appropriate executions. Grey and black, together… Add a blazer, add some sandals… The under-20 counterpart opts for a mini-skirt and bare legs, while the more sophisticated Ms. Paltrow opts for tights, leather, and a little more coverage. Which to choose?! I went for Gwyneth because I love a good pencil skirt.

Next, we see the results of my ~10 question quiz:

result

“…Are you sure?” was the first thing out of my mouth when I saw a towering photo of J.Lo sitting next to the words “Couture Glam”. Me? Couture? Glam? Hmm, well… If it says it’s true, I suppose I’ll go with it!

Accompanying each “result” (there are tons) is a polyvore-esque collage of related looks and items, as well as “Wardrobe Influences”, which I found much more to my taste, however…

influences

It’s still calling me couture. Couture everything! Do they truly know the meaning of the word “couture”? Hmm.

Either way, I relate much stronger with the “Minimalist” idea than the “Conservative”… But hey – I’m rollin’ with it.

Next, we get to choose brands!  (Do you like that I’m including you with the whole “we” thing? I feel very Martha Stewart.) And then sizes! And then… something I’ve not seen before:

pref

Preferences on colors, patterns, and styles that we don’t want included in our emails? So, I can choose to never see a plaid platform pump ever again? And shiny short shorts are off the list, too? And anything with granny florals in blue? Amazing.

After that, I got to select my sizes, specific for each type of garment (tops, bottoms, shoes, etc.) and off we went! I just had to confirm my email, and poof – there was a newsletter waiting for me in my inbox.

proof

The newsletter is divided into sections by garment type. At the top of the mail: shoes. Oh, glorious day – these are beautiful. Only one problem: HOLY EXPENSIVE. That’s the one thing that Covet.com is missing – a price preference option. While I’d love to own a pair of $600 Jimmy Choos… It’s not exactly in the budget. Unfortunately, the other sections are the same way, suggesting I purchase a $245 Diane Von Furstenburg top and a $1,250 Herve Leger dress…

Unfortunately, it appears that, without the price preference option, this service may just be completely useless to me (with the exception of eye-candy-feasting, that is). If you’ve got nary a money-trouble in the world, definitely sign up – immediately! There are some great deals on designer gear in there… But if you’re one of the broke and beautiful, you may want to look elsewhere.

xoxo.

Probably watching Netflix.
