It’s possible that the “Spirit of the New Year” – resolutions and such – is nothing more than necessity masquerading as some supernatural inspiration that only comes once a year, right after Santa.
Either way, I like it, and as long as it’s all progressive – I have no complaints.
Well, that’s not true. I do have complaints. I’m dissatisfied with my life value. In other words, the amount of work I’m putting into my life right now is not worth the result. Make sense? I’m doing the life-equivalent to hamster-wheeling. Not good.
So in the last few months – via Getting Healthy, and otherwise – I’ve been making some changes. For one, I got a new job at a publishing company. It’s not a call center, it’s not a restaurant, it’s a publishing company and it’s a lot more “up my alley” than sausage demonstrating (and, yes, I have been a sausage demonstrator. Read as: my last steady job). So, in the same vein, I have to examine my #2 passion, as well – clothing, obviously.
Yes, I am taking this supernatural inspiration Claus to my closet. …Claus-et? No, too far.
I’m dissatisfied with my clothing value. I am either paying too much for stuff I’m not wearing often, or I’m paying too little for things I love that only fall apart. This isn’t good!
So I’ve completely gutted my wardrobe, taken inventory, inspected fabrics, seams, notions… It’s time for a 2010 Overhaul. I’ve created a list, not necessarily priority-based, of all the items I “need” (meaning “hardcore desire and can justify the purchasing of… oh, & would improve my quality of life to a noteworthy degree”) in order to feel like I’ve got a solid wardrobe on my hands – more importantly, one that will last for years with minimal investment and upkeep.
1. A Quality, Versatile Handbag
Must go from work to… not-work easily. Must go with pretty much everything. Must be able to hold pretty much everything, including my laptop & cookies. Must be under $120. This has to last me for > 2 years.
2. A Remarkable, Classy Winter Coat
Do you want to know what kind of professional attire I currently wear to work? A gigantic, puffy, nylon (yes, it makes the “nylon-rubbing-together” sound!) coat that hits the top of my hips, with a furry hood. This is my professional choice. Nay, it is my only choice. Therefore, I must find a beautiful, elegant coat that is preferable duster or trench length. I’d like for it to be wool, lined with a natural fiber, and have the construction of the Coliseum. Or at least something that will last me > 5 years. Must be under $200. (Yes, I’m upping the price because the materials I “require” are more expensive!)
PS – It’s 5 degrees as I write this, and that’s only scratching the surface of a Chicago winter.
3. Go-With-Everything Black Heels
You know the ones I’m talking about. They look good with mini dresses, leggings, trousers, maxi dresses (!!!), and jeans. No more than 3.5″, platform preferable, must not cost more than $100. These will last me > 1 year. Hey, I wear my nice shoes.
4. High Quality Jeans
…in spades. I mean it. Since I’d been able to, I’d bought my jeans at Target until about a year ago. Not kidding. Once I was introduced to the world of good denim, I’ve not bought one pair. Why? A combination of my size, and my standards. Premium denim brands don’t seem to offer my size, which is a 14 or 34-36 in jeans, depending on where. However, once I met my Thimbler Jeans, a custom made pair sent to Jen & me for review at TD, I was kind of googly-eyed over denim. So, if they have to be custom – fine. But I’m not paying more than $100 for them, and they’d better last me > 3 years.
5. Multi-Situation-Appropriate Tops
This means, in short, that the tops I wear to work must also be good at going out for drinks, meeting a friend for coffee, going to the grocery store, and doing out to dinner. And whatever else I feel like doing. So, they have to be gorgeous, I must be crosseyed in love with them, and they must be the epitome of versatile. Because of the high criteria here, I’ll “need” fewer of them. This will allow me to spend no more than $100 on each, and it will last me for >3 years, with good care (which I may have to learn).
6. Un-Snow-Boot Snow Boots
Remember what I said about my coat? The whole “opposite of professional” thing? Well, take that story, delete the piece about the coat, and replace it with the terms “gigantic rubber boots”, and you see my problem here. Knee-high boots are perfect for snow, but I really am not into the idea of carrying other space-consuming shoes in my purse to change into after I arrive. Plus, who wants to be the kid sitting in the stairwell, pulling their boots off, socks, etc…? Not me. I need decent-looking, weather-surviving boots (flat to 1.5″ heel for walking) that can be worn with dresses, leggings, jeans, pajamas, whatever. Must be less than $150, and last me for > 5 years. Oh yeah.
•••
I’m going to replace my “Wish List” page (in the sidebar, on the right!) with this list, as it’s more important than wishes at this point – it’s dire. I’ll update as I acquire each piece!
I should also note that this list is really only looking ahead the next 3-4 months. I will continue to add to it as the weather, and my needs, change. On a similar note, this is a guilt-free list. This is the product of crunching the proverbial numbers of my knowledge of clothes combined with my own personal needs and style. Anything on this list has officially been removed from the previously popular “Wannnnnt, but shouldn’t…” list and only the “I deserve, and will have” list – without a droplet of shame! If it improves my quality of life, how could it be superficial?
What do you “require” or “need”, fashion-wise? Do you have a list?

After about three solid years of wear, my magnificent go-with-everything black heels died in London towards the end of 2009. They still remain at my old office, in a pile of shoes under someones desk, but they are no longer my fabulous little go-to shoes. So I’m on the look out for their replacement, I expect it to be something of a mission.
Kate: Ohhh, I’m so sorry! Three solid years? That’s amazing! See, that’s the kind of story I want to tell! Not “I bought these shoes, went dancing, and they internally combusted on the walk to the cab.”
Hopefully the mission will be more Blues Clues than Bond!
Your list is the perfect example of quality not quantity. The most efficient use of the dollar with the greatest return of personal satisfaction. Well done!

A great list! While reading it I’m nodding away like a ceramic dog in the back window of a big car.
The coat is the most needed item where you live I’m guessing. I’m in Minnesota and it’s -16 (no lie!) as I write this comment. The other thing to consider for a wonderful black coat is its ability to ward off clingons. I have a lovely one, but it grabs everything in site and after just a little bit of time looks horrible. No matter how much I brush it.
And one more word for you – cashmere! Lovely, soft, warm, classic. And sexy in that Grace Kelly type of way.

YES YES YES! I was reading this and just saying YES after every sentence. I mean, why have I paid for all of this weird shit but I don’t have a proper winter coat or boots? The lack of which makes my life hell – every. single. day. I also loved that you are deeming this list “guilt-free.”
I’m making one.
Immediately.
Well, I’m happy to keep my eyes open for you, although I think you may want to up your purse budget a bit if you can, but here’s my rationale.
1. Quality handbag – I bought this Dooney in the emerald green 2 years ago and have used it every single day straight since then. I change into a smaller bag for going out every once in a while but other than that this goes to all events, even Fashion Week and carries everything – http://bubblegumplastic.blogspot.com/2007/12/emerald-city.html
2. Coat – I bought a long cinnamon-colored wool coat that I have worn every winter to Chicago, NY, all around here in NC, Paris, London etc. It came from The Limited… 20 years ago. I think it was under $200.
3. I say go for black patent heels. They’ll dress up or go with jeans. In that range I’d pick Nine West because they fit me the best. Your preferred brand may vary. Many of my shoes I’ve had for 5+ years, some as old as 10 years.
4. Denim – I just buy Gap, and recently bought a pair of JCrew matchstick jeans to tuck into boots. I’ve never bought “premium” denim so I can’t attest to that. But I’ve been happy with Gap and get a new pair every other year or so depending on my weight.
5. Tops – This is probably your most specific taste-defined area. My go to would be JCrew but yours may vary
6. Boots, I just bought some flat black knee high boots from Target for under $30. What I like is they’ve worked in the rain and snow so far, seem to be holding up pretty well and I don’t worry about ruining them. I can’t speak to the five years yet, but I like that I can wear them with skirts and jeans so that may be a consideration. They dress up enough for work or going to dinner but are good with the tucked in jeans. http://shoedaydreams.blogspot.com/2009/12/funky-functional.html
Hope that helps!

Deborah: CASHMERE! Oh, girl. You totally know. Cashmere, indeed. <3
Marzipan: OH AWESOME! I’d love to see your list!! I feel all revolutionary about this – no more crappy clothes!
Poochie: WOW, amazing suggestions! I’ve actually already picked a bag – but I just got lucky with the price. I’m really happy I didn’t have to go upwards of $200 for it! Thanks you so much for your suggestions.
I have a similiar list, because I’m just going from kid clothes to “grown up” clothes. Mine’s a bit longer, but I need ALL the basics unfortunately. Henleys and converse just aren’t cutting it anymore.
Erin: Ohh, we are so on the same page! I’ve been rocking Converse as my “casual shoe” to the point that it’s ridiculous. They have holes all over, the rubber is falling off… Not a good look! If you find amazing basics, please let me know, yeah? <3
Try these… I love them. They’re a bit more than you want but totally worth it.
Oh my gosh – those are STUNNING! Everything about them is perfect! They’re a leeeeettle bit higher than I’m used to, but I’d totally give them a shot! I’ll keep an eye on them. Thank you so much!! <3
honey, i’m with you on the handbag and tops. haven’t invested in a quality work-nonwork bag since my michael kors fell apart after less than a year of use. and my tops…well, let’s just say it’s time for a rehaul after being out of college for five year, amirite?
xoxo.
This a list that every girl should bookmark as, “Wardrobe Necessities”. I think 2010 is going to be all about quality over quantity for a lot of people partially because of the recent economic crisis and partially because, well, i don’t know, JUST BECAUSE…
I’m in search of a little quality in my wardrobe too, so this list is a great place for me to start, thanks!
I have about 6 or 7 fairly well made-wool coats that keep me warm enough for the East Coast winters, but I’m still in search of really good, versatile tops I can wear no matter the situation and a good professional looking handbag.
I can’t wait to see your new quality pieces for 2010!

kt: YES. Exactly. It’s time to move past my college wardrobe and into big-girl clothes. 100%.
Chelsea Rae: The economy DEFINITELY offers people a reason not to buy quality for themselves… In all arenas! The economy is what it is, you know? What if it’s like this for the next 10 years? We can’t keep depriving ourselves! Rahh!
Wow, great list! I’m also in the market for a great coat, perfect handbag and black heels (I need more). I hope to design more #5’s (multi-appropriate tops)in 2010. I love them too so I just keep making ‘em! xoxo
I would spent my last penny on a great pair of jeans, pending they last for 3 years, but what about the fading! I can’t find a pair of jeans that isn’t a completely different color after 5 or so washes.
I enjoyed this post…and I can relate to the denim issue. I’m the same size as you, and it’s frustrating not to fit into the cooler looking, high quality denim brands. That said, I have to recommend a cheap and attractive buy here.
I bought the “skinny” style jeans from NY & Company and I have gotten so many compliments! I never thought skinny leg jeans could be flattering to an average size shapely body, but these are fantastic…people keep telling me how slender I look in them. Granted, you won’t have the fancy name tag and fabric finishes of the nicer brands but you’ll save money and look good.
Jenny: WOW, ok. You are psychic. I have had the NY&Co skinny jeans in my cart for WEEKS not sure if I should buy them or not. I’m definitely going to now!! Thank you!
P.S. Miss Elle – I tried them on in the store and went up one size bigger than my normal dress size. Depends on your preferences. I don’t like my jeans fitting skin tight.
Ok, non-snow boot snow boots. I trudged all over Chicago today — up then down the Mag Mile, across the loop, through my unshoveled neighborhood — and these kept my feet dry and warm: Timberland Lexiss
http://tinyurl.com/yhve72u
Ok, that is the world’s ugliest link. These boots don’t have any particular lining (e.g. sheepskin or fleece), but they are seriously waterproof. That and the wind-stopping powers of leather boots take you a long way toward warm without looking like a sorority girl or the michelin man. Granted, I’m the weirdo who wears skirts 365 but after today I’d say these are my pick.
Love Love Love your list! I’m inspired to make my own.
1. Handbag: So with you there! I can never find one to suit all my needs and be cute at the same time.
2. Coat: I am a huge advocate of splurging on an amazingly luxe coat. Winter is like 8 months long in Chicago, so it’s worth the investment. My coat has silver lining, velvet, and decorative trim (oh my!).
3. Pumps: I second whoever mentioned Nine West. I have a pair of simple brown mary jane pumps that are comfortable, yet I always get compliments on them. They have lasted over a year so far and I think they will last much longer.
6. Boots: Have you considered this style? http://chicagosgotstyle.com/2009/12/01/modern-victorian-in-the-south-loop/
Ok, so they technically aren’t snow boots, but I have a pair like them and they stand up to the weather pretty well!
