Dedicated: Top Tips for Purchasing a Fragrance for Someone Else

The fragrance or scent that someone chooses to wear can be a very personal thing. That’s why purchasing a fragrance for a friend or loved one can at times be a daunting task if you are unsure of their preferred brand or favorite notes in a scent.

But if you would like to buy somebody a perfume or cologne as a gift, how do you ensure you find the perfect scent for that special someone? Follow these 5 fool-proof tips which could make your life a whole lot easier.

Do your research

When buying a scent for someone else, it is so important to do your research prior to purchasing. Take inspiration from their current collection of scents, find out what they like about each one and more importantly what they dislike when it comes to fragrances. You can also get a good idea of what a person may like or dislike from the candles they choose to burn in their homes or even the skin care products they tend to use. It’s also a good idea to try and find out how different scents make the person feel, a perfume can bring on such strong emotions and can also remind us of certain times in our lives (good and bad). If you want to choose something that will evoke a feeling of happiness or even romance, uncovering which fragrance notes will hit the spot is key.

Let their style inspire you

You can tell a lot by how a person chooses to dress themselves and this can also ring true when it comes to which scents they may prefer. Does the person you’re buying for have a very feminine style? If so, they may be a fan of more delicate, floral scents such as rose or lavender. Perhaps their style is altogether more edgy with leather and metal hardware being a prominent feature of their wardrobe. This person may be a fan of darker, heavier scents containing notes such as clove, musk or tobacco.

Choose a scent with great packaging

Although this shouldn’t be the sole reason for your choice of fragrance, it is wise to choose a scent that looks as good as it smells. Often the packaging a fragrance comes in will say a lot about the scent itself. So if you know that the person you’re buying for hates anything pink and girly try and avoid any perfume that comes in this type of packaging as it may put them off the scent completely. Choosing a perfume with attractive packaging also gives the gift an edge and makes it feel even more special.

Don’t avoid the bestsellers

If you find that you are really struggling to find something, don’t write off best selling perfumes as an option (they’re bestsellers for a reason!). Buying a popular scent doesn’t make the gift any less special and at least you can be sure that it’s a tried and tested favourite. If you know that the person you’re buying for would really appreciate something more unique, you can always go for the best selling scent of a lesser known, more unusual brand. Find a small store that sells small independent or foreign labels and ask what their most popular scents are.

Stick to their favourite brands

If you are completely unsure as to which scent notes will be a hit, then you can always play it safe and stick to the person’s favourite designer brand or label. Maybe they have been lusting over a famous brand for years or even dress head to toe in their brand of choice the majority of the time. Either way, you can be confident that a scent from this label would probably be well received.

If you shop smart and choose correctly, a well-suited fragrance can be a really thoughtful and personal gift that will be cherished. Hopefully the above tips and tricks will make buying a scent for a friend or family member a whole lot easier!
