Blackheads are open pores that get clogged due to excess sebum and dead skin. This problem of blackheads is usually common among pre-menstrual women and teens. It is a misconception that blackheads occur as a result of exposure to dirt. Rather, they are clogged hair follicles that occur over the surface of the skin. It is a combined side effect of dead skin cells, pollution, sebum, grime, and germs that get a chance to penetrate into the skin and form a plug. The brown or yellow color is because of the oxidizing reaction of all these substances with the oil stuck inside the pores. Blackheads usually occur around the sides of the nose, cheeks and over the nose.
