You either love it or you hate it. Some people can’t even touch it without squirming… Others want to be buried in it. (Not entirely unpractical – it makes a great coffin lining!) That’s right, when the wind blew in this round of cyclical fashion trends, it brought velvet along with it.
Many people blame the 90s for the sudden velvet revival, but velvet fashion is clinging to a much longer legacy. At least once per decade, velvet fashion seems to rise up and strike a chord in the trendsetters and tastemakers. You just can’t escape this bizarrely opulent fabric, and why would you want to? Velvet fashion is legendary!

Velvet in fashion is so ubiquitous that it’s had songs written about it, movies named after it, and it’s become synonymous with smooth, silky sleaze. What more could you ask for from an affordable fashion trend?
Every time velvet fashion comes around, though, it’s different. Don’t worry, there are plenty of Bowie-esque velvet jumpsuits hanging around, but designers are shaping velvet into newer, modern shapes for women. Now that masculinity in feminine fashion is less of a statement and more of a style choice, clothes like velvet blazers and trousers – both great ways to introduce velvet to your wardrobe – are much more flattering and versatile than ever before. Plus, duh, fashion is more affordable now than possibly ever!
Here’s how come unbelievably rich people wear this round of velvet:
Historically, the most common uses of velvet are strappy camisoles, babydoll dresses, and strappy platform shoes. These are fine… but they kind of play into a caricature of what velvet fashion should look like. People forget that velvet looks amazing when used on accessories, too. Velvet handbags, velvet backpacks, velvet chokers… they’re all good.
This isn’t my first dance with velvet fashion, though. In the past, I’ve fallen for velvet statement shoes, and who could forget Courtney Love’s velvet-y collection for NastyGal? I make no excuses for my love of cyclical trends, and am happy to hop on almost every train (sorry mom jeans).
I’ve gathered my favorite affordable velvet fashion and cute velvet accessories to celebrate the return of the polarizing zombie trend of the past. Be sure to tell me your history with velvet in the comments! All velvet-related prom stories are mandatory.
