Summer.edu: Cocktail Shakers

If you’re a classy broad, and summer’s coming up, there are two things you need to obtain ASAP:

  • High heeled sandals
  • A Sweet Cocktail Shaker

They’re the two most important objects, and also the two items you’ll use more than anything else during the sweltering summer months.

What?
What’s that you say?
Oh, you have a plastic cocktail shaker already?
Oh, it has recipes on the side?
That’s GREAT!
THROW IT OUT.

I’m not even joking. Plastic cocktail shakers are just about as effective as plastic oven mitts. The stainless steel cocktail shaker is ideal for its conduction properties as well as the whole “stainless steel” aspect. Let me know what color your fancy plastic shaker is after one too many Blue Hawaiians.

There’s a shape and size for everyone… From 8oz. shakers to a whopping 28oz. for me those of us who appreciate good drinks more than others. Here are my recommendations if you’re going for a theme, or just looking for a shaker to match your dazzling personality.

RETRO CHIC & MOD

I know the “mod” and “retro” trend is exploding like St. Helens, so I found the perfect shaker for those of us who live our lives as sexy anachronisms.

Metrokane Bullet Cocktail Shaker – 16 oz.

$35 $16

Slated as the “1930’s art deco design”, it would go perfectly with your favorite housewife outfit, lots of gin, and some sexy perfume. Have a larger party (or appetite)? It alsocomes in a 28 oz. size for only $4 more ($20). Yeah, baby.

Recommended Beverage for this shaker:

The Sidecar

It originated in the early 1900s in France by a man whom visited the same Parisian bar each night in his friend’s motorcycle sidecar.

3 parts Orange liqueur (Cointreau)
3 parts Brandy
1.5 parts fresh lemon juice (If I catch you using bottled… So help me…)
Garnish with sugared rim & lemon wedge
Rim a chilled cocktail glass with the lemon wedge and sugar. (Discard the wedge.) Combine the Brandy Orange Liqueur and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker, with ice. Shake well, and strain into the prepared glass.
MODERN, NOT MOD

Don’t get confused! Mod = Sweet 1960’s bold colors & shapes. Modern = Geek chic bachelorette pad with black, white and steel dominating the scene. You can’t tell me it doesn’t sound futuristic-sexy.

Metrokane VIP Cocktail Shaker Black

$20 $16

Looks like something you’d carry your coffee to work in, which you easily could, I suppose. Just switch out the coffee for a sweet espresso cocktail, or something.

Recommended Beverage for this shaker:

The Chantelle

2 parts Vodka
1 part tonic
1 part Peach Juice (The real stuff! Not the sugary crap, you’ll regret it!)
Garnish with raspberries and a sugared rim

In your sexy new shaker, put ice, vodka and peach juice (NOT tonic!) and give a good shake. Sugar the rim and fill a short glass with half ice and half raspberries. Strain shaker contents over the mix and top with tonic water. Give a little stir to mix the tonic with the peach and vodka.

FASHION OBSESSED

I always have to include this category because, well, it’s mine. Actually, I like to think of myself as a combo of all three. Maybe not. I don’t know. This has nothing to do with this category, it’s just filler. Onto the shaker!

Vera Wang Challis Martini Shaker

$84.95

Is there anything this chick doesn’t do? Vera Wang is everywhere… And making some sexy shakers, too. At your official designer price, no less!

Recommended Beverage for this shaker:

Pret-a-Porter (Ready To Wear)

2 parts Ginger Beer (You can find this at most Whole Foods/Trader Joe’s)
1 part Vodka
1/2 part Raspberry Liqueur (Chambord)
2 parts Cranberry Juice
Garnish with ginger and lime peel

Fill half a short glass with ice. In your shaker, put the Vodka, Raspberry Liqueur and Cranberry. Shake lightly and pour over ice. Fill to top with half ginger beer and half shaker concoction. Stir and serve sprinkled with shaved ginger and lime peel.

ARTSY LOVER

You know the type I’m talking about. The girl who knows all about Magritte, loves DuChamp (ew, personally) and can take even the most apprehensive guy/girl down in a fit of passion.

Couzon Silhouette Shaker

$48 $35.52

Sexy, sleek, a little offbeat… Perfect for the seductive artsy girl.

Recommended Beverage for this shaker:

Light Green Panties

2 parts Vodka
2 parts Bailey’s Irish Cream
2 parts Green Creme de Menthe
Shake the vodka, creme de menthe, and Baileys over ice in a cocktail shaker. Strain into a small glass. The drink with have a light green thick consistency while tasting like the Andes Mint Chocolate candy.
