The Importance of a Pencil Skirt

Model Micheline Love

Pencil skirts are a timeless classic, and definitely staple in today’s woman’s wardrobe. They’ve been around for decades and, judging by the fact that they’re still here – they’re not going anywhere.

Re-popularized by the rockabilly and secretarial crew, pretty much any figure can pull off a pencil skirt – and pull it off well. In past years, black has been the preferred color, but with the massive surge of bold colors for spring ’08, I encourage you to begin acquiring an array of colors that match your personal style palette. Here are some options on the cheap…

Taking a page straight out of rockabilly culture would be this Pencil Skirt w/Polka Dot Print from Classic Closeouts. It comes in bold red, or black with small polka dots. Can you imagine it with some fishnets and platform heels? Burlesque stars, beware! $10.99 in all sizes.

If you like the red, but the dots aren’t your style…

… try this plain red, Button Front Pencil Skirt. Still sexy, still bold! Just without the dots. From Rampage for $9.99 in sizes 0-9.

Is red too racy? You want to stray from black, but not so boldly? No problem!

It’s a little longer than your average pencil skirt (these days, anyway), so if you’ve got great calves – show ’em off in this! It’s a beautiful gray color (color of the season) and the buttons in front are chic, too. Makes for a wide waistband, which covers and “imperfections” in the tummy area. From Wet Seal for $20.50.

I’ve been hearing all over the place that white is the new “big thing”.  I’d believe it! But white scares me… As it does most of us with rockin’ curves. But self-consciousness is so 2007, so in order to make it palette-able this early in the year, let’s add some vertical pinstripes to our white – just in case. ;)

Another wide waistband – gotta love that! The Pinstriped Wide Waistband Pencil Skirt from Wet Seal would be a delicious way to kick off your new 2008 self-confidence challenge. (For only $18.50, you won’t feel too bad if it’s not your bag, anyway.)

xoxo!

  • @ Jami: Thank the heavens for whoever invented "wide waistband"! The length of the gray one really gets my motor revved, too.
