Review: Smooth-Away Hair Remover

I was asked to review the infamous info-mercial giant, Smooth Away. You’ve likely seen it – the little paddle that sits on the slender hand of the smiling model in the bathrobe, gently “buffing away” all of your unwanted hair?

Yeah, seems too good to be true, huh? Well, that’s what I thought…

It has many-an-instruction to follow before using. Mostly, the basics: clean skin, no lotions, etc… Also, your unwanted hair should be no more than 1/4″ long (I didn’t have a ruler, and thusly, paid for it).

My kit came with everything you see above – all of which fit nicely into that unsightly lime green case. Apparently, my hair was slightly longer than 1/4″ (hey, it’s winter) so removal took up one entire pad, which is definitely not good, because you only get three, and I have two legs… That means that with three pads, eventually one leg will be left out and hairy. Not good.

So I attached the big exfoliator pad to the big paddle (which is… not easy, at least for me) and slid the thing over my hand. The instructions say to buff in circular motions, three clock-wise, three counter-clockwise, and so on. I wasn’t a fan of the whole “counting” idea, so I just kind of winged it.

The nice thing is that you can totally zone out once you get the hang of it, and you don’t have to apply a lot of pressure to the pad in order for it to work. Yes, I said “to work”, which it does.

After about 5-10 minutes of circular motions all over my leg, I noticed that the hair was, in fact, gone. There were a few patches that were a little stubble-tastic, but with some extra buffing, that was no problem.

The kit also comes with a “hair inhibiting” moisturizer which smells like coconut. The “hair inhibiting” portion, I don’t buy, as the little booklet mentions that users “saw a noticeable difference in density and coarseness” with daily use over a 61 day period. C’mon – I’m not moisturizing my legs EVER SINGLE DAY for an inkling of difference. Sorry. But it did moisturize nicely. I think I’ll look into the electric shaving guide by Josh Cullen next, since this is not for me.

Anyway, I first did both legs two days ago and now, while there’s obviously going to be some “regrowth” (I hate that word), it’s noticeably less than that of shaving with a razor.

Overall, this puppy works, and I’m really excited about it, because I hate shaving in the shower. HATE IT. So now I can watch Mad Men and zone right the heck out. Bravo.

If you want to try it for yoursef, you can buy it here. (Warning, before clicking, mute your speakers. You don’t want everyone in the library/cafe/whatever knowing that you “want to get rid of your unwanted hair? *tchhhrrrrt aka sound of waxing strip*”) It’s only $14.99, which is not bad.

xoxo.

Lindsay: Probably watching Netflix.

  • LOL, I can not believe this product actually works! I have seen it on TV, and I sat there thinking, "I wonder if that really works?"

So how long did it take you to grow 1/4" of your leg hair? I just wanted to know if it's worth buying or just shaving. I've been thinking about waxing come warmer temperatures.

  • I tried using something similar once, but it just irritated my skin :( Of course, it wasn't this brand, and I do have uber-sensitive skin from hell, but eh. For $15 I might try picking it up, because if it does work, then that's a lot better than spending like $12 on new razorheads every time I run out (damn you, Quattro for Women, and your expensive blades!).

  • Thank you so much for the review - I have been dying to try this for some time but it did indeed seem too good to be true.

  • I tried using this too. Being someone with a definite hate of body hair, I was willing to shell out the $10 or $15 i spent to see if it works, and it did— much to my surprise! I didn't get the "hair inhibiting" moisturizer though. Apparently they don't sell that at Target...

  • FAB! Thanks for this - Ive been contemplating this for some time, I saw a presentation on HSN the other evening and almost nabbed - now i will definitely cruise over to target and pick up a kit! Smooches!
