Boxy Tops & Pencil Skirts

I’ve been really attracted to this silhouette lately: a high-waisted, narrow, pencil skirt with structural, boxy tops.

I’m sure that there are a ton of publications saying that specific body types “shouldn’t” wear this silhouette, but I really encourage you to consider that as garbage, and to just wear whatever you want. Some of the most beautiful tops come in silk, structural, straight shapes and regardless of my shape, I want to wear them!

I bring up the body type thing because magazines always say that this is the best style for gals who are more broad up top, or are short in the “curves” department… (the boxy shape balances out a “thicker” waist, the pencil skirt shows off slim legs, etc, etc…) Why should they have all the fun?

Structured, Boxy Tops & Pencil Skirts

Sleeveless Pintuck Top
| $40
Straight Skirt | $69.40

Modcloth Polar Explorer Top | $32.99
ASOS Jersey Pencil Skirt | $34.48

Slant Wise Color Block Top: $28
Velvet Gauzy Whisper Sintia Skirt in Midnight
: $70

There’s something really easy and comfortable looking about this shape. There is definitely a reason that 2/3+ of these pencil skirts are jersey… It’s obviously the most comfortable fabric ever, and I don’t imagine I’ll be walking in heels like I have to pee if there’s a jersey pencil skit instead of a rigid wool one. I feel super luxe whenever I wear a silk top, though… Plus, the juxaposition between a casual-esque pencil skirt and a silky, luxurious boxy top sounds like a contrast I’m definitely interested in.

What do you think of this silhouette?

  • I love this look! I was scared to wear the shorter tops but ordered one from F21 that was short in the front and longer in the back. Looks great with skinnies and it magically does something to make your tummy smaller!

  • I've tried wearing this look, but the amount of curvature I possess doesn't let me keep the silhouette I like. The shirts tend to fall too high on my torso while the skirts lose their structure against my hips. Le Sigh~ I'll just have to admire the pictures!

  • I would imagine this look could look great on anyone if they tuck the shirt into the skirt. It would emphasize the small of their waist and isn't that always a good thing? I definitely love this look. I don't have a really defined waist and I feel like high-waisted things show that I have one.
