WYW: Brightly-Colored Jeans?

I aaaaalmost bought a pair of burgundy skinny jeans at Marshall’s this weekend.

The jeans I almost bought were basically these ones by Current/Elliot,
except mine were a hell of a lot cheaper.

The “bright jeans trend” first emerged on the S/S 2011 runways, and Lindsay fell in love with it back in June. As we move firmly into fall, fashion just can’t seem to shake all that color: while at Marshall’s, Lindsay and I saw mustard jeans, (blindingly) blue jeans, red jeans, and even orange corduroy…jean…things.

The reason I re-racked my burgundy beauties – which were perfect for my skin tone and reminded me of that same burgundy color that everyone wore, everywhere, with everything, back in the mid-nineties (god I missed that color!) – was two-fold:

  1. They were too long. (I’m 5’1″ and thick like a smoothie, which is hot unless you’re trying to buy pants.)
  2. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to “get away with them” at the office.

Even on casual Friday, colorful jeans feel like a no-no. They’re just so damned bright, and so obviously jeans, and also so fucking trendy. My bosses would throttle me. Right?

Right?

…but…what if I wore a really nice black silk shirt, one that was draped and pretty and maybe a little glamorous, with a pair of classic pumps? Or boots?

Not that I have a glamourous draped black silk shirt or anything.

The trick to wearing bright jeans seems to be to keep everything else relatively neutral. Blacks, greys, whites and peaches are safe, or at least they are if you know you’re not going to meet with super stuffy business clients that day.

Do you own any brightly-colored jeans?

What do you wear them with, and where do you go in them?

  • I could never get into colored jeans. They remind me of middle school in the ninties...I love tights!

  • I tried to get into this trend last year after watching the Music video for SNSD's Gee (youtube it - even if you don't know what they're saying the video is just so darn PEPPY). But being that I have short, very rounded legs, the excess color just draws attention to the things i'd much rather hide.

  • I feel the exact same way. I bought a pair of the red Old Navy Rock Star jeggings. I've put them on 3 times and taken them off in like 10 minutes. Something just doesn't feel right. I'm hoping with cooler weather, I can make them work with cozy sweaters and boots.

  • Absolutely!! Colored jeans were my first item on Is It Worth It. I didn't pick a price-efficient pair, but I love them. Right now, I own a tomato red pair of skinny corduroys.

  • I haven't gotten a pair but I like the idea. I'm more err.."top heavy" one could say, and I think the balance of bright on bottom, neutral on top would be a good thing for me. I would wear bright blue or peach or a dark pink, I think.
