WYW: Loafers?

This post is long overdue. These have been in every store I’ve shopped in for months, and I can’t dodge the issue anymore.

I don’t “get” loafers.

Why? Why are these appealing? I mean, there have been an ungodly number of flats since forever, so why the loafer-specific craze? They remind me of thrift shopping in the 90s and Jackie from Roseanne. Some people might be into that mid-90s style, but I suppose I’m not on the train.

That’s not to say I couldn’t be sold, though.

I disliked pickled ginger for years and years, but it always stared me in the face when I was enjoying the hell out of my sushi. So after a few years, I decided to learn to like it. It was definitely a decision. Nowadays, I can eat the whole little pile! Flatforms: same story, without the eating. I think that there’s potential for me to understand loafers, if not like them.

I’m interested to hear from people who swear by this style – the same cult-ish following as shoes like Foot Asylum adidas originals. I want to know how you wear them, and especially how you get the 90s Roseanne connotations out of your head when you wear them.

[Loafers, top to bottom: Nine West Black Pony Hair “Panto“, $69.99; Bamboo Mansion Loafer, $29.95; Rocket Dog Morrison Flat, $34.95.]

How do you wear loafers? If you don’t, would you?

Lindsay: Probably watching Netflix.

  • So funny how almost everything comes back into style. If I had a penny for every time my Mom said, "I used to wear that in highschool," I'd be sittin pretty. I used to be a loafer hater, but have to admit I love them now!

    • No kidding! Can you imagine what the next generation is going to wnat to wear? Vintage JNCOs and polyurethane/clear vinyl stripper heels... Yikes.

  • I agree - I don't really get them, but maybe I'll warm up to them in the future. I think they're less flattering than regular flats because of the higher vamp.

However, I still do not get flatforms. *shakes head*

    • I'm sure that, now that I've publicly stated that i can't deal with loafers, I will fall in love with the most loafer-y-est pair of loafers ever and wear them every day until I'm 50 - when I'll start wearing ~vintage flatforms~ because they're trendy.

  • I must admit, I've been sporting some loafers for a few months now (I have a leopard pair, a blue velveteen pair with tassles and a pair of classic leather penny loafers). I like that they're comfortable yet aren't your same-old flats--they've got more structure to the soles and have that pretty shape on tope.

But really, I don't know why the trend is hitting so hard right now. Well, I guess the answer is in the question: trends!

  • P.S. I definitely don't wear socks with mine! Some might think this is gross, but honestly, I rotate my shoes long enough for them not to get stinky. No stinky feet! Haha...

    • No, I totally think socks make them worse! If I can understand anything about them, it's treating them like "interesting flats," for sure.

  • OMG. THANK EWE.

Everytime I see these, I think, "Okay. Some are kinda cute..." but I just can't see myself wearing them without looking like a soccer mom in the 80s. And while I'm willing to try a LOT of trends, that's a look I can't get behind.

  • Yeah. I'm right there with you, on these. I don't 'get' them, & I surely don't buy them. With all of the other flats out there that are actually cute &/or fun, why loafers? Seriously. Why???
