I am feeling dull today… completely blank and lacking in any creative motivation.

It’s just so Tuesday in December-y. Not really noteworthy, but not really that bad. I woke up on time, and I was able to cloth myself in a mediocre getup I only plan to wear around the house. I drank water, ate a muffin… Pretty unremarkable.

That is, until I went outside where, apparently, everyone and everything is really cold. I thought about the plans I have for this season, which actually includes winter crabbing – getting onto a boat, going out into the open water, and collecting Dungeoness crab out of the sea. It might sound random, but my family breathes seawater, and crab has become somewhat of a mascot for our holiday festivities (of which there are many).

So I have a coat. It’s gorgeous, and wool, and has ruffles on it – it looks really, really good with dark jeans, but doesn’t really have a place on a sea-spider-infested 22′ boat in the middle of Saratoga Passage. Aside from the avoiding the awkward stares when I get into the boat with a silk-lined, ruffled, black peacoat, I think that having a rain coat (aka real-life outerwear) in your closet is a necessity.

Why?

  • Bonfires in late summer
  • Snow day adventures
  • …Winter crabbing?
  • Hiking
  • Rainy days

See? ALL of the best things. The best ones are lightweight, but also are waterproof, windbreakers, have three million pockets, and have a hood. High standards, but hey – that’s ok. Because. There are still inexpensive options. We’ll lower our standards when we can’t get away with it.

And I don’t have one. My super-outdoorsy family would shun me if they only knew. I’ve been telling my Dad that “I forgot my waterproof jacket…?” for years. The jig is up. Time to be an adult.

Do you have a strictly utilitarian jacket?

Probably watching Netflix.
