Every time a drugstore makeup brand does a runway show, I feel victorious. Chalk another one up for the broke beauty lovers!
For a long time now, I’ve been doing my best to tell people that drugstore makeup is where it’s at. So when Maybelline sent makeup artists to over 15 different runway shows during New York Fashion Week earlier this month… Let’s just say it was the mother of all beauty touchdown dances.
The makeup artists responsible for these looks are Grace Lee, Erin Parsons, Gucci Westman, Yadim, and Gato. These aren’t interns or random Instagram models, you guys – these are incredibly talented makeup artists that are well-known in the industry for mastering the art of beauty… and they’re using Maybelline at New York Fashion Week.
The beauty brands you see in the drugstore are frequently several decades old. They’ve been dominating the affordable makeup game for a long time, and they’re still kicking ass. Some of my current holy grail products are from Maybelline. They have winners in just about every category: foundation, concealer, lipsticks, highlight… Everywhere you look, they’re doing a good job at something.
Despite having a buttload of incredible and diverse products, many of the same products were used across all 16 runway shows. More surprising than that, there was a major lack of lip colors happening. In fact, nearly half of the runways were full of models who were only wearing clear Babylips lip balm.
Another trend from the Maybelline runways? Highlighting and strobing. *insert sound of feigned surprise* Who didn’t see that one coming? While some artists clearly have their favorite products, there is a good representation of Maybelline’s highlighting products across all of their shows. From sticks to creams to powders – they covered all of the high points.
Despite the fact that many of these locoks are quite subtle, you can’t help but be inspired by the simplicity and execution of each look. The more editorial makeup looks also come with a softness. I guess there is an inherent softness to spring and summer, but these diffused-but-bright looks are something a little different.
No matter what your skill level is when it comes to makeup, these looks from the Maybelline team make high fashion feel accessible to use broke folks, and that’s freaking awesome. The idea that these beautiful beauty looks were achieved with products we can usually find under $10 and within ten miles is definitely something to celebrate.
