Maybe you’ve seen the little image in our sidebar talking about some sort of “discord,” or heard us yapping about “joining our server” on Twitter. Are you WTF? Well, this page will explain what the #BrokeLife Discord server is all about.
If you already know what’s up, then what are you waiting for?!

What is Discord?
While other communities use Facebook groups, YouTube channels, or email lists (we have one of those, too, actually…) to get closer with their community, we have fallen in love with a multi-platform chat system called Discord. Broke folk need to stick together, so we’ve made a #BrokeLife Discord server specifically for Broke & Beautiful readers!
Basically, it’s like an old-school, topic-based chat room… but instead of one room, we get an entire house. In Discord, the “rooms” are called “channels,” like a radio station, and the “house” is called a “server,” so they’re kind of like different, topical radio stations along a radio dial.
Each channel has a theme: we have a channel for beauty sales, fashion inspiration, a channel specifically for roasting products, a channel for general banter – there’s even a channel where we can listen to music together through Spotify! Best of all, just like on a radio, you can switch between channels and easily see where new conversations are happening.
Discord originally became popular with the gaming community because of its excellent voice chat abilities, so that’s a whole slough of features we haven’t even tapped into yet – but maybe we will! (Live Q&As with interesting people? ASMR mukbangs? Bootleg concerts? The possibilities are endless!)
How do I use Discord?
Discord is a rising star in the technology world, and they have created excellent applications for your computer and your phone. There’s absolutely no need to install both unless you are really digging the experience, but if you want to stay tuned in to the conversations and keep up with the community, it’s not a bad idea to have both!
After you have the app, the only step left is clicking this link to join the #BrokeLife Discord server. That’ll send you straight to the good stuff!
Once you’re on the Discord server, in the #BrokeLife Discord, this is what you’ll see:
On the far left are the icons for different Discord servers. You can see B&B’s logo for easy access to ours. Then, the next column to the right has all of our channels. You can see there is a place to talk about fashion, good sales, yell about beauty or fashion brands… You get the idea. Best of all, you can see the latest posts on B&B as soon as they’re live – and that includes sales added to the Sale Calendar which youcan find in the #sale-calendar-feed channel!
The channel at the bottom, Music, is where we get to put in song requests and listen to awesome tunes through Spotify. It’s seriously awesome. Then, the biggest area of the screen is obviously the conversation pit of the Discord server. Here, you can see Heather & me talking about the wonder of grocery store fashion shoots. Also that dinosaur jacket is amazing! And the tights… anyway, that’s what happens in the Discord.
On the right you have all of the people currently subscribed to the Discord server. They’re gonna be your new BFFs, so get in here!
If you’re on mobile, it’ll look like this:
Pretty much the same, just smaller.
Getting into the conversation is easy-peasy – just start typing! Post a picture, link an article, even just react to other people’s comments with emoticons (kinda like Facebook). Or if you just wanna lurk, that’s totally fine, too.
Think you’re ready?
