When my lips get dry, they go all out. We’re talking about a peeling, cracking, white-edged mouth that makes me look like I need an exorcism. No matter how much water I drink sometimes, my lips will revolt. I finally found my best defense, and it came in the form of a lip mask called Slumber Salve from the indie beauty brand, Notoriously Morbid.

I received a sample of Notoriously Morbid Slumber Salve in a monthly box and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Notoriously Morbid has themed makeup subscription boxes that arrive monthly with a new and often exclusive product from NM’s library. Considering they make everything from eye primers to duochromatic liquid lipsticks, I can tell you from personal experience that awaiting each month’s box is very, very exciting.

But that’s a story for another post. Slumber Salve is not your run-of-the-mill lip balm. It actually, truly changed the way my lips feel, and the price is absolutely ridiculous. (…ly low, if that wasn’t clear.)

The sample of the thick, gel-meets-balm that I received had the scent of a freshly opened box of Fruit Loops. This might seem weird, but the scent was so spot on that it left me drunk on nostalgia. Notoriously Morbid is always playing around with scents for their lip products, and this lip mask salve comes in many olfactory forms. The one I received in my monthly box was exclusive to subscribers (another reason their boxes are awesome), but they have a total of seven permanent Slumber Salve scents.

  • Blood Roses: Red velvet cake with light rose.
  • Mystik Spiral: White chocolate dipped waffle cone.
  • Toasted Marshmallow: Marshmallows and waffle cone.
  • Vanilla Veil: Vanilla and honey.
  • Cast A Spell: Pumpkin, pecan, and waffle cone.
  • Mischief & Mayhem: Peppermint mocha.
  • Something Wicked: Hot apple cider.

Vanilla Veil is the scent that I keep buying over and over, but Toasted Marshmallow and Something Wicked are definitely calling to me.

Basically, this mixture of waxes, butters, and oils doesn’t melt once it touches your lips like other balms. This formula will actually stay thick and hydrating for actual hours.

The best time to use this is at night, right before bed. After all, it’s Slumber Salve, and it’s technically a “lip mask” and unless you’re the type that rubs their face all over their pillow when they sleep, Slumber Salve will be on your lips when you wake up.

It demolishes flakey, cracked, dry lips overnight. It has rescued me from the deepest depths of dehydration. Even hangover wake-ups are no match for Slumber Salve, so try to incorporate a quick slather into your drunken bedtime routine. Sunburned lips? Use this as a treatment over a few days and you’ll undoubtedly see an improvement in hydration.

This is a also great lip product to apply right after you exfoliate your lips because it’s nice and smooth. Plus, exfoliating lips can result in some irritation, and the beeswax and shea butters in Slumber Salve will definitely feel good on roughed up lips. I’d recommend this to anyone looking to keep their lips exceptionally soft and hydrated.

Best of all, this perfect little indie product is only $4. For only four bucks, you get this adorable little pot of 0.23oz of Slumber Salve in your favorite scent. You can’t beat that, especially from an indie beauty brand. You can tell that these are small batch products because of the high quality and handmade label, but the performance rivals any high end brand.

Probably watching Netflix.
